There are a host of reasons why your car battery could be dying regularly. For instance, if you come home late at night and forget to switch off the headlights or some internal lights, you’ll certainly wake up to a drained battery in the morning. Your car battery may also drain due to a faulty charging system. When driving, many vehicles power the radio, lights, and other electricals using the alternator. If the alternator is faulty, for instance, due to worn out tensioners, the electricals will have to draw power from the battery, causing it to drain.

If you want to learn how to jump-start a car, this is a step-by-step guide on how to do it safely. Note that jump-starting a car carries the risk of explosions and fires. So, it’s imperative that you understand and follow these steps keenly.

Jumper Cables

Car batteries don’t last forever, but it sucks when the battery dies at the parking lot or gas station. Luckily, it’s easy to revive it if you know how to use portable jumper cables. When you connect them properly, these booster cables crank your vehicle using another running car’s battery in around 5 minutes.

To hook up portable jumper cables, you typically need two cars. Pop both hoods, and then connect the red and black clamps to the battery in the car that won't start. Then do the same to the other vehicle. Start the working car, and let it idle for a minute. Turn on the dead car, disconnect the cables from both vehicles, and you're good to go!

1. Connect the cable

Begin by parking the vehicle with the good battery next to the car with the dead battery.

Open the hoods of both cars and locate their batteries. If the batteries are covered by plastic hoods, remove the hoods so the battery posts are exposed.

Locate the positive (+) and negative (-) posts. The positive post may be red, but it's not always, so it's best to look for the plus or minus sign to determine the post's polarity. (Before you attach the clamps, be sure to remove any dirt from the posts.)

Next, get out your portable jumper cables and connect one of the red clamps to the positive (+) post of the dead battery. Make sure that the clamp is firmly connected. Clamp the matching end of the same cable to the positive (+) post on the working battery.

Connect one of the black clamps to the negative (-) post of the good battery. Make sure the clamp is firmly connected. But instead of connecting the other end of the cable to the negative post of the dead battery, clamp it to a bare, metal surface on the engine of the dead car — like a bolt or a screw. This will provide grounding for the jump start.

2. Start the car engine that is running

Start the working car and run it at idling speed for a few minutes. After letting it run, start the "dead" car. Once your "dead" car has started and is running, immediately disconnect the portable jumper cables in the reverse order. Your car is running, but your job isn't over, Once you get your car running again, make sure to let it run idle for at least 30 minutes or drive it around for a little while to recharge the battery. After that, take it into a garage.

3. Disconnect the portable jumper cable

As soon as both vehicles are running, you can disconnect the portable jumper cables. Remove the clamps one at a time, in the opposite order you placed them. Start with removing the black cable from the engine block, and then remove the other black clamp from the working vehicle. Then remove both ends of the red cable, ending with the clamp attached to the dead battery.

After disconnecting the portable jumper cables, you can turn off or re-park the vehicle you used to start the dead battery. However, you should allow the other vehicle to continue to run. Let it idle for a half-hour to recharge the battery. You can also drive it around the block a few times to help the battery regain a charge.

How to Use Jumper Cables

Portable Jumper Cables FAQs.

For what portable jumper cables are used?

Also known as the jump or booster cable, the portable jumper cable is an isolated cable. They are paired and have crocodile clips used to connect car batteries to other energy sources. These sources can become other vehicles or batteries that have the same voltage as the car that needs to be found.

Do I need to turn off my car before disconnecting a portable jumper cable connection?

Yes! Don't touch the cable if your vehicle runs. Car sources and help must be turned off before the connection or disconnection. If not, it can cause vehicle damage and potentially shock someone.

Why do I need a portable jumper cable?

The portable jumper cable will be thicker and has a higher gauge, allowing more electricity to pass quickly to jump vehicles. This ensures that you can jump your car in the worst condition, like if it's cold and you have a very drained battery.

Can the battery die be refilled?

Your vehicle alternator is intended to keep a functioning battery, but cannot revive the battery flatly. If your battery completely runs out, the only way out is to try it to jump or connect it to the battery charger.

How long will it be driven after the jumping start?

After a successful jumpstart, make sure you drive a vehicle for at least 30 minutes before turning off the machine. It will get enough costs to the battery so you don't have to start a leap again.
