How to Use Portable Jumper Cables?

To hook up portable jumper cables, you typically need two cars. Pop both hoods, and then connect the red and black clamps to the battery in the car that won't start. 1. Connect the cable 

Begin by parking the vehicle with the good battery next to the car with the dead battery.

Open the hoods of both cars and locate their batteries. If the batteries are covered by plastic hoods, remove the hoods so the battery posts are exposed.

Locate the positive (+) and negative (-) posts. The positive post may be red, but it's not always, so it's best to look for the plus or minus sign to determine the post's polarity. (Before you attach the clamps, be sure to remove any dirt from the posts.)

Next, get out your portable jumper cables and connect one of the red clamps to the positive (+) post of the dead battery. Make sure that the clamp is firmly connected. Clamp the matching end of the same cable to the positive (+) post on the working battery.

Connect one of the black clamps to the negative (-) post of the good battery. Make sure the clamp is firmly connected. But instead of connecting the other end of the cable to the negative post of the dead battery, clamp it to a bare, metal surface on the engine of the dead car — like a bolt or a screw. This will provide grounding for the jump start.

2. Start the car engine that is running

Start the working car and run it at idling speed for a few minutes. After letting it run, start the "dead" car. Once your "dead" car has started and is running, immediately disconnect the portable jumper cables in the reverse order. Your car is running, but your job isn't over, Once you get your car running again, make sure to let it run idle for at least 30 minutes or drive it around for a little while to recharge the battery. After that, take it into a garage.

3. Disconnect the portable jumper cable

As soon as both vehicles are running, you can disconnect the portable jumper cables. Remove the clamps one at a time, in the opposite order you placed them. Start with removing the black cable from the engine block, and then remove the other black clamp from the working vehicle. Then remove both ends of the red cable, ending with the clamp attached to the dead battery.

After disconnecting the portable jumper cables, you can turn off or re-park the vehicle you used to start the dead battery. However, you should allow the other vehicle to continue to run. Let it idle for a half-hour to recharge the battery. You can also drive it around the block a few times to help the battery regain a charge.
